We endeavour to resource and support our community by creating opportunities to extend their artistic practice through facilitated testing and experimenting with ideas in projection based, digital and new media practices. Our education-based opportunities increase the participant's literacy to embed projections and digital interfaces into their existing practice, for both gallery and Public Art contexts. With the support of our partners we work together with contemporary artists toward various exhibiting outcomes, Masterclasses, Panel discussions, Artist talks, mentoring and Artist Residencies.
Centre for Projection Art, 2024 Artist-In-Residence Program

Centre for Projection Art welcomes you to this EOI process for our hybrid Artist in Residence Program. Within this program we deliver artistic, research based and technical mentoring resources and support to the selected artists through an agile and adaptive digital and in-person model. This residency is responsive to the participants through which mentors and the residency group are invited and encouraged to work in a self directed way and meet on a regular basis around their residency and project needs. We facilitate group conversations in consultation with the cohort, which; can be done online with the option to have onsite access to our studio at the Collingwood yards. Through these meets, the cohort is guided through experimentation and to workshop existing or emerging ideas, work site specifically and meet each other as much as possible to share knowledge, skills and create an ongoing dialogue around the use of new media practices. For this iteration of the residency we are excited to partner with Fed Square and work specifically with a cohort who are in dialogue with ecological awareness, presentation in public spaces and climate justice.
CPA Residency supports contemporary visual artists, who are emerging in the digital, new media spaces and are excited by the medium of projections, with a desire to further explore and develop the use of projections through their art practice. During the residency period; with the support of professional mentors, the artists in residence will work in a process driven way to conceptually explore ideas, working towards outcomes that incorporates projections into their practice.
Centre for Projection Art will provide professional development opportunities throughout this residency program led by the needs of the selected artistic practices. The artists will receive an honorarium of $1000 to participate in this residency.
We will also work with you closely to showcase the outcomes of your work in public spaces and in other contexts that suit your ideas and practice, led by you. These works may also be curated and programmed into Centre for Projection Art exhibitions, events and festivals (subject to additional funding and agreement). The Centre for Projection Art continue to work with our artists in residence relationally in an ongoing capacity.
For the 2024 residency (April - December 2024), we are inviting artists who are specifically addressing ecological awareness and climate change urgencies in their studio practices. As a key focus of our partnerships in 2024, this residency will create a space to build conversations responding to the urgent questions around this issue as a way to strengthen and develop existing ideas and showcase the artworks as part of the Gertrude Street Projection Festival from the 25th July to 4 August 2024. The residency will continue beyond the festival as an opportunity for the artists to evaluate the exhibited work and learn further from its successes and failures.

Outcomes: Resident artworks will be curated into the Gertrude Street Projection Festival 2024 on Gertrude Street alongside an offsite showcase at the Main Screen of Fed Square.

The aim of this program is to provide contemporary artists with a framework to develop their projects and practice that benefit from projections and create a space to test and experiment ideas with new media. The focus will be to create the participant's literacy to embed projections into their existing practice, for both gallery and Public Art contexts. At the conclusion of the Masterclass, each participant will have a deeper understanding of the medium and a facilitated space to create a proposal for a site-specific projection-based artwork that can be used in the future.
Centre for Projection Art's Masterclass in Projection Art has been generously supported by the City of Melbourne, The Meat Market, EPSON, and Lupa.
GSPF Volunteer EOI
We need your help to make GSPF come alive this winter. Volunteers are needed for our Street team, Invigilators, Front of house, Bump in/out crew, and Block party crew. All shifts will be 3 - 5 hours from 20 July till 10 August.
